Advice on acquiring paintings or starting a collection

The art business is a profession, with rules and laws governing its transactions. However, there is no law that prohibits the charging or exorbitant sums of money for sub-standard work or work by artists of limited importance whose prices are, for whatever reason, inflated.

One example may be found in the client who was asked for almost €500,000 for a painting worth less than half that sum.

Our fees in this instance were €1,500. We do not charge a percentage for this type of work, rather we apply an hourly rate and estimate in advance the total fees which will apply.

The same principals apply to the acquisition of lesser works. If you are considering spending a couple of thousand euros we will be happy to advise you for a small fee.

Identifying the artists whose work will hold its value in the long term requires skill and expertise. Don’t be afraid to seek advice from professionals.
